About Brent Caldwell

Brent has a post-graduate diploma (DPH) & master’s degree (MPH) in public health.

Brent Caldwell has experience in every aspect of research from his experience at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand and the University of Otago. His experience ranges from development of ideas for research question, trial design, protocol writing, applications for funding and regulatory approval, training and coaching research assistants, statistical analysis using R, writing manuscripts of the result of trials, getting the manuscripts accepted for publication, and peer-review.

Brent has an undergraduate medical degree (MBChB) and experience of working as a junior doctor at three hospitals. This gives him the scientific and practical understanding of the pathophysiology of health and disease, and the ability to understand and think of biologically plausible hypotheses.

Brent has a post-graduate diploma (DPH) and master’s degree (MPH) in public health. This shows he understands the influencers of public health, and the effects of poverty, inequality, and injustice on public health. Brent’s doctorate is based on two large randomised placebo-controlled trials of novel nicotine replacement therapies (a mouthspray and a pressurised metered-dose inhaler) for smoking cessation. His attainment of this degree is evidence of his tenacity, and ability to write a cohesive convincing evidence-based argument.

Brent is enthralled by assisting researcher to develop their ideas, gain funding, receive regulatory approval, statistically analyse and publish their results.

“Dr Brent Caldwell worked with me as a research fellow and then senior research fellow from 2006-15 in the Department of Medicine University of Otago, Wellington. He was conscientious and exceptionally hardworking, developed considerable research skills including successful grant writing, clinical trial design, and statistical analysis, predominantly using the R language.”

Professor Julian Crane

Wellington

“Brent has worked with R for over ten years. He is an experienced and detailed coder, he has a strong grasp of the language structure and the ability to quickly learn and apply new packages. Brent’s analyses are comprehensive and he ensures every possible angle is covered.”

Associate Professor Nevil Peirse
Statistician, University of Otago, Wellington.

“I had the pleasure of working with Dr Caldwell at the University of Otago over several years, including as collaborators on several clinical and epidemiological research projects. I found Brent to be a hard-working and dedicated academic. He was prepared to commit significant time and energy to researching optimal patient-centred solutions, and was extremely thoughtful and considered in his decision-making. He always had a positive attitude and a humble and reflexive approach.

He was aware of his limitations and willing to seek support when needed. He was excellent at maintaining communication with colleagues and stakeholders and the establishment of effective relationships. He was well regarded for his cultural competence and relationships with Māori whānau and community providers. I would have no hestitation in commending him to any employer.”
